Frequently Asked Questions

The Chancellor of Community Colleges of Spokane has appointed a broad, representative Athletics Director / Dean of Physical Education and Recreation Search Screening Committee, including faculty, administrators, professional/exempt, and classified staff who are committed to serving in an advisory role in the search process. The chancellor was interested in having a committee that is manageable in size and includes a wide variety of backgrounds, expertise, and perspectives.

The Athletics Director / Dean of Physical Education and Recreation Search Screening Committee will screen candidates and conduct interviews during the first phase of the search process, during which strengths and weaknesses of candidates will be identified for consideration by the president. This will not be in the form of a ranked list or include a recommendation. The chancellor will determine which candidates will be finalists for return to the campus for the second phase and more in-depth portion of the search process.

As is the standard for search processes for other positions within the CCS district, the screening committee will conduct their work as part of a committee, not individually. They do not solicit, speak with or otherwise investigate or interact with the candidate outside of the interview process.

Yes. Advertising of the search is intended for the broadest and most diverse pool of candidates, including but not limited to:

The Athletics Director / Dean of Physical Education and Recreation search will be a nationwide confidential search. Since individuals will be less likely to become a candidate in searches where disclosure of names occurs, a search in which the participation of individual application is kept confidential will result in the widest and deepest candidate pool.

Many prospective candidates will not participate in a search unless they are assured of confidentiality because they do not want to jeopardize their effectiveness in their current positions. The higher the position held, the more likely the candidate will suffer negative consequences from disclosure of the candidate’s identity.

Many of our candidates will hold key positions at other institutions and will only submit an application if confidentiality is guaranteed. Members of the search committee and all individuals directly involved in the search have signed an agreement that secures confidentiality for all discussions and deliberations related to the Athletics Director / Dean of Physical Education and Recreation search.

Internal candidates are vetted in the same way as external candidates. All candidates are assessed based on the criteria laid out in the Athletics Director / Dean of Physical Education and Recreation Search Profile. The committee very carefully selects the strongest candidates, either internal or external, for further consideration based on the vice president search qualifications and experiences.

Regular updates on the progress of the search will be posted to the Athletics Director / Dean of Physical Education and Recreation search page. Information about the search committee members, the charge to the committee, the Athletics Director / Dean of Physical Education and Recreation profile, timeline and updates will be posted on the page.

The search committee and chancellor are committed to providing updates throughout the process at appropriate intervals. This will be done by posting updates on the Athletics Director / Dean of Physical Education and Recreation Search page. Campus wide emails and press releases may also be issued to draw your attention to the Athletics Director / Dean of Physical Education and Recreation Search page at important points in the process.

Each finalist selected to advance in candidacy will be scheduled individually for a visit to the campus for the second phase of the interview process. The announcement will be on the Athletics Director / Dean of Physical Education and Recreation Search page with each finalist’s biography, along with scheduled forums for campus and constituent groups.

The chancellor hopes to identify three to four candidates in late Spring 2020; with selection of the next Athletics Director / Dean of Physical Education and Recreation before the anticipated start date of July 1, 2020.
