Spokane Community College’s environmental science department was recently awarded a $24,811 grant from the Hagan Foundation, which was established in 1997 by Cornelius E. Hagan, Jr. in Spokane. The grant is in partnership with Central Valley High School’s AP environmental science program.  SCC instructor Dave Stasney and CVHS instructor Krista Larsen will be leading the project, which is expected to include more than 30 students collaborating on the service-learning project.

Spokane Community College student Aaron Miller will be honored with a Transforming Lives Award from the Washington State Association of College Trustees (ACT) on Jan. 23 in Olympia. Only five students, out of 388,000 students across 34 colleges, are awarded each year.

Spokane Community College’s Adult Basic Education Division was recently awarded a Washington Department of Transportation grant to support students in the Skills Trade Preparation Program. The Pre-Apprenticeship & Supportive Services (PASS) grant program provides funding for defined supportive and wrap-around services and pre-apprenticeship training for females, minorities and socially and economically disadvantaged individuals. The goal of the program is to create diversity in the highway construction workforce and to create pathways into apprenticeship for the highway construction trades.

Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS) will serve as the lead host for six of Eurasia’s most dynamic and highly educated emerging leaders through the Rumsfeld Foundation’s Open World Program next week. The group will be in Spokane to learn about accountable government and economic development while experiencing some American culture and building connections to our community.

Local high school teachers and college instructors will once again have an opportunity to participate in a sustainability workshop project hosted by SFCC faculty members, Scott Rollins and Adriana Bishop. The two instructors are co-principal Investigators for a National Science Foundation grant to provide college instructors and K-12 teachers with tools for integrating sustainability into existing programs through problem-based learning communities. The project focus is to support future science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) workforce by partnering with business and industry on sustainability initiatives. Upcoming workshop registration will begin in early spring for the June 2017 projects.

SFCC Information Technology students led an IT summer camp in June funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.  Seventy middle school girls participated in the camp, which was taught by six female IT students.
