Getting Around in Spokane

Living in Spokane also means you need to be able to get around in Spokane.  Most of our international students live within 15-45 minutes by bus or car of either Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) campus or Spokane Community College (SCC) campus.

Spokane By Bus

Spokane Transit Authority (STA) www.spokanetransit.com, Spokane's bus system,  is great.  Buses come and go at SFCC and SCC every 15-30 minutes taking students to and from our campuses to their host family homes, apartments, and around town.  They are easy to use and convenient.

You can travel to SFCC or SCC from any STA bus route and all buses connect downtown at the STA Plaza where you can transfer to Route 20, serving SFCC.  To go from SFCC to SCC, students can take Route 33.  Other bus routes that serve SCC campus are Route 32, Route 29, and Route 39.

Discounted bus passes are available for $85 per quarter and can be purchased

Spokane By Car

So you want to get around using your own car?  Do you have a Washington State driver's license?  To get one, students need to follow the steps found on the following website:

http://www.dmv.org/wa-washington/drivers-license.php

If you are a first-time driver in Washington State, the steps found here will be helpful.

Perhaps the most important issue facing international students who want to buy their own car and drive it legally is providing proof of identity.

You must have the following documents when you go to the Department of Licensing to apply for a license or a Washington State I.D. card:

1.  Proof of identity:  Passport with F-1 Visa, current I-20, I-94 card, and Social Security card (if you have one).  Most international students do not have a Social Security Card, but it is not necessary.

2.  Proof or residence:  2 letters from the Global Programs Center (see Trina Allen at SCC and Katherine Thompson at SFCC).  These letters cannot be opened by the student.  Please allow at least 5 school days for letter requests.

3.  Other photo identification:  Other identification such as a valid driver's license from your home country.

4.  $45 USD in cash or personal check drawn on a bank in the United States
